Future Flowerings
In 2013 the St. Issey in Bloom group decided to make a 3/4 year plan regarding areas of the village which we wanted to enhance - not alter the structure of the village as we are very proud of the friendly and pretty surroundings we already have.
The first project was the 'Lost the Plot' allotments - the following pictures (photographs 1 and 2) show how this project has ghrown over the last three years. Secondly, the island outside of the school gates. This is now our pride and joy (photographs 3 and 4). We then divided the grass verges around the village hall into sections, developing them into landscape displays. We started on stage one in 2013/2014, which is now taking shape, as the photograph (5) shows. Stage two was started this year (2015) with the addition of the 'Boxing Hares'. This area will continue to be develped over the next few months (see photographs 6 and 7). This year we decided to go for a strong colour impact on the raised flower beds, which are situated on the main A389 road that runs through the hear of our village (see photograph 8). Trail Leading to SuccessResidents of the village of St Issey, Cornwall, have been actively engaged with the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Britain in Bloom’ challenge having decided to use the opportunity to preserve aspects of our local heritage which were in danger of becoming lost and forgotten with the passage of time.
Utilising the wide range of skills to be found in our local community, the St Issey in Bloom working party set about designing, researching and installing a number of information points which have led to the creation of a heritage trail around the village. The trail, still in its early days, charts some of the historical and cultural changes which have taken place, some of these dating back hundreds of years. Given that in less than 25 years the village has lost its Post Office, Village Shop, two petrol stations and two antique shops it is clear why residents are keen to preserve as much history as possible. By the clever use of original photographs and explanatory text, changes in the fabric of the village can be clearly seen. It is planned to expand the trail over time and to include more locations and information as time and resources permit. The clever design of the existing information points means that individual information boards may be replaced and updated as further research reveals more and more information. Additional information stations can be added in allowing the trail to be expanded as necessary. In the longer term, when the trail has matured, it is hoped that it might lend itself to the creation of a small village history which could eventually find its way into print. That however is for the future. In the meantime the St Issey in Bloom personnel are busy weeding, watering, cutting and trimming! Nature never sleeps! |
